Sony has added Rise of the Ronin to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, making it available today for Extra and Premium subscribers in the US and UK, with Japan following on July 16. It is the headline addition in a month that uses Sony’s new staggered rollout model for select markets.
What Is Rise of the Ronin?
Rise of the Ronin is available on PC and PS5 – if you want to own rather than stream it through PS Plus, you can grab a key for [price] right now.
Rise of the Ronin is a 2024 action role-playing game developed by Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PS5. It is the third collaboration between Sony and Koei Tecmo, following Nioh and its sequel.
Set in Japan, 1863, the game places a nameless warrior in the middle of a country in turmoil – after three centuries of the Tokugawa Shogunate’s reign, the Black Ships of the West have arrived and the nation has fallen into chaos, war, disease, and political unrest. The game received praise for its historical setting, combat system, weaponry, traversal mechanics, and soundtrack, though criticism was pointed at the graphics and open-world design.
Team Ninja’s open-world samurai RPG launched as a PS5 exclusive in 2024 before going on to become publisher Koei Tecmo’s best-selling game ever. The game is also now available on PC after two years as a PlayStation console exclusive.

The Full July 2026 Game Catalog Lineup
While Game Catalog updates previously all dropped on the same date, Sony Interactive Entertainment is exploring the delivery of games on varying dates in select markets. Games are available on varying dates in the US, UK, and Japan, while the full lineup becomes available to play on July 21 in all other regions.
Here is the full staggered schedule for US and UK subscribers:
| Title | Platform | Date (US/UK) | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rise of the Ronin | PS5 | July 15 | Extra + Premium |
| Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora | PS5 | July 21 | Extra + Premium |
| Firefighting Simulator: Ignite | PS5 | July 21 | Extra + Premium |
| Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind | PS5, PS4 | July 28 | Extra + Premium |
| Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector | PS5 | July 28 | Extra + Premium |
| Dying Light | PS4 | July 28 | Extra + Premium |
| Snow Bros. Wonderland | PS5 | July 28 | Extra + Premium |
| Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy | Classic | July 21 | Premium only |
| Indigo Prophecy | Classic | July 21 | Premium only |
Two PS2 classics land in the PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog this month: Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy and Indigo Prophecy.

Standouts Beyond the Headline Title
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a first-person action-adventure set in the Western Frontier of Pandora, arriving globally on July 21. Ubisoft has continued supporting the game since its 2023 launch.
Firefighting Simulator: Ignite simulates fires, heat, and smoke in real time on Unreal Engine 5, with missions playable in co-op with up to three friends or with an NPC crew.
Of the July 28 batch, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector earned wide acclaim for its writing and melancholy sci-fi worldbuilding, and is the rare Game Catalog addition that feels like a genuine highlight.
The Bigger Picture
Sony’s decision to stagger catalog additions is now into its second month of testing. Sony has been experimenting with spreading catalog additions across weekly waves in the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan since June 2026, rather than dropping everything simultaneously. For subscribers outside those three markets, nothing changes – all titles land on July 21.
The value case for Extra and Premium looks reasonable this month. Rise of the Ronin is a full-price PS5 title that flew under the radar at launch but has built a strong reputation since. Pairing it with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Citizen Sleeper 2, and the original Dying Light gives the catalog genuine breadth. If you already own some of these but have been eyeing Rise of the Ronin without committing to a purchase, the price comparison below is worth a look before you subscribe or upgrade.
