Rise of the Ronin Joins PS Plus Extra and Premium Game Catalog

Sony has added Rise of the Ronin to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, making it available today for Extra and Premium subscribers in the US and UK, with Japan following on July 16. It is the headline addition in a month that uses Sony’s new staggered rollout model for select markets.

Rise of the Ronin is a 2024 action role-playing game developed by Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PS5. It is the third collaboration between Sony and Koei Tecmo, following Nioh and its sequel.

Set in Japan, 1863, the game places a nameless warrior in the middle of a country in turmoil – after three centuries of the Tokugawa Shogunate’s reign, the Black Ships of the West have arrived and the nation has fallen into chaos, war, disease, and political unrest. The game received praise for its historical setting, combat system, weaponry, traversal mechanics, and soundtrack, though criticism was pointed at the graphics and open-world design.

Team Ninja’s open-world samurai RPG launched as a PS5 exclusive in 2024 before going on to become publisher Koei Tecmo’s best-selling game ever. The game is also now available on PC after two years as a PlayStation console exclusive.

Firefighting Simulator: Ignite simulates fires, heat, and smoke in real time on Unreal Engine 5, with missions playable in co-op with up to three friends or with an NPC crew.

Of the July 28 batch, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector earned wide acclaim for its writing and melancholy sci-fi worldbuilding, and is the rare Game Catalog addition that feels like a genuine highlight.

Sony’s decision to stagger catalog additions is now into its second month of testing. Sony has been experimenting with spreading catalog additions across weekly waves in the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan since June 2026, rather than dropping everything simultaneously. For subscribers outside those three markets, nothing changes – all titles land on July 21.

The value case for Extra and Premium looks reasonable this month. Rise of the Ronin is a full-price PS5 title that flew under the radar at launch but has built a strong reputation since.
