After the near perfection of Spelunky I had a hard time finding a game that really satisfy my desire for the genre. A couple games have stuck out and one of them is A Wizard's Lizard. Clever title aside I have to say this is a really fun game with a couple really clever concepts. At its core A Wizard's Lizards is a top-down dungeon brawler. Every time you play you're dropped in maze of randomly laid out rooms. You're free to explore them all to max out your loot and find better equipment. Or minimize harm to yourself a go straight to the boss room. That is the beauty of any great roguelike, the push-your-luck choices you constantly have to make. The combat system is fairly simple but feels really good. Find the right weapon and equipment to match your play-style then go to town on the enemies. Unlimited use of your staff is great just be sure to watch your cool down time. Your soul orbs give you a nice powerful boost but its number of uses is limited so be careful. The coolest part of this game and the element that makes it so unique is its light/dark mechanic. Death is not the end in this game. When lose all your hit points go from the dark world to one of light. Many of the enemies you struck down will reemerge as ghosts and ghouls. Quickly make your way to nearest wicca symbol to give yourself back to the darkest and protect yourself from death once more. Being able to recover from a near death experience like this is quite exhilarating. To conclude, this a well thought out roguelike. It has a very charming, colorful, art style with may funny looking characters. The combat consist mostly of smart movement and equipment savaging. All put together a neat little game that doesn't take terribly long to complete but is difficult enough to make you try a handful of times till you make it through.

I found the life after death part to be pretty unique, but not enough to make it a game I would readily return to. The quests you receive again seem like a really cool idea, but aren't very fulfilling. The whole game just seems washed out, which might be more a sign of the saturation of the genre than the game itself.

I didn't think I would at first to be honest (I bought it as it is an HTML5 game and I am an HTML5 developer), as the graphics are a bit childish looking in my subjective opinion - but the game is actually a lot of fun - I enjoy the top view shooting mechanic, and though it can seem unforgiving at first due to its rogue like nature, once you start building up startup money and various weapons / itmes it becomes quite addictive.I haven't tried the new version yet, I had beaten Death and stopped playing it.. but now I'll give the new version a try.As for the review who comments on the hit boxes being off - you would not want the hitbox to be the entire entity, as there'd be no room to play, and due to it being slightly 3D overhead view, you need to have some give with the hitboxes. Trust me you wouldn't like it if they were the entire area of the sprites.

Oh boy, was I wrong. The best thing this game does is shamelessly plagiarize Binding of Isaac's gameplay with some Rogue Legacy elements. Also, the graphics and sound are well acomplished, if -once again- a shameless copy of BoI.Unfortunately, the positive things about this game end there. The gameplay is spiced with some annoying puzzles and some kind of "second chance" in the form of a ghost form when you die, but the whole time you will getting a "cheap" feeling, like playing a phone or browser flash game. The bad optimization, with random stutter without any apparent reason doesn't help, same with the random crashes I'm getting every 30 minutes of gameplay. (Playing on a i7 with a GTX680 GPU, so I doubt the problem is on my side.)To make things even worse, the hitboxes of the character, the enemies and the missiles are totally off, although in some cases things go more or less OK, in many encounters you will see a sword going right throught you and making no damage, or hitting a wall and actually damaging you.All in all, most of these problems and bugs can eventually be fixed by the devs, and the game, in short doses and at a reasonable price (putting an absurd price and then making a huge discount at launch is an old trick, and it doesn't work anymore) can be enjoyable.Just don't expect to find Binding of Isaac 2, because you're going to be sorely disappointed.
