After many tries, I did eventually find my way to and through the final boss, and all I wanted to do was do it again. I suppose in a lot of ways, that’s just the nature of roguelike games. They often offer a near bottomless replay value thanks to the “structured but random” structure of the format. This combined with the joy of bobbing your head along and clicking when you do so makes the experience a ton of fun and feel great. The quantity of content isn’t huge, but for $20 USD, I certainly think it is well worth the money.

If you are seeking a unique experience, this is among the best you can find.

As with most roguelikes, BPM: Bullets Per Minute is one of those games that you will either love over time or hate immediately and shelve for other things. The variable is within the random generation and contending with whether the game wants to throw you a bone or not. Aside from this, BPM is a solid meld of the rhythm action and FPS genres, combining an excellent metal soundtrack with solid gunplay that has a lot to offer, if you can break the stubbornly difficult surface.

I don’t mind a challenge, but the difficulty is mind-blowing, the mechanics are hard to get used to, and BPM: Bullets Per Minute is just so unforgiving, both in terms of rhythm and combat, that it’s hard to find much enjoyment. That said, the concept is great yet whilst the idea seems like a good one, in execution it’s tougher to sell.

The whole premise is that anything you do in the game (dodging, using abilities, and shooting), has to be on the beat with the song, which is indicated by a triangle which acts as a crosshair.All the gun's are very weighty and sound amazing paired with a fantastic heavy metal sound track.It's a great rouge like with a bunch of different abilities, guns, and other traditional rouge like elements, and a new bank system which I thought was a neat idea.The soundtrack in bpm by far has one of the best sound tracks I have ever heard with 11 different songs, each area and boss having its own song.My biggest problem was how some enemies can blend in with the environment due to the styled graphics, which is not the most appealing but I got used to it after some time.I played this on a ps5 and it ran very smoothly, but there were few times where the game would crash and it would reset my progress to the starting area of the level. (It would not reset the entire run, just the level you are on).The game has no need for a story, the only reason I am spending so many hours on this game is it's fast paced game play and a 10/10 soundtrack.

Constant movement is useful and almost necessary as the rooms are often be crammed full of enemies with many lunging or shooting projectiles. The problem is that Doom has a rhythm all of its own. A constant, urgent rhythm that keeps you on edge until danger has passed. Forcing this into the middle of an entirely different rhythm dictated by music is disorienting at first. The result is that the player is required to dance to two different beats simultaneously, making the game perfect for those seeking a challenge. I truly struggled with this style gameplay. The game was best (for me) when the heart of the rhythm mechanic is taken from the experience. Turning on auto-rhythm unshackles my weapons from the soundtrack. Suddenly, I am a master of disaster and mowing down everything in sight. I can really appreciate the variety in the weapons and lore to be found. Boss fights become challenges I enjoy rather than dread to the beat. Game modifiers that BPM identifies as "challenges" can be unlocked, but the game doesn’t explain how. One I accidentally gained access to is "full auto", which truly brings the game to life. Difficulty defaults on Hard, but all weapons have auto fire, and there’s no worry about the rhythm mechanic. The rogue-like design is a much more powerful influence on the experience than the rhythm shooting. There are no permanent advantages to earn. No shortcuts, no new starting weapons, no increased health, no increased base stats. There are stats in BPM by the way. Elements such as range, damage, and movement speed can be increased by offering coins to the randomly placed statues scattered across each dungeon. Coins, with which you can also purchase weapons and items from the two shopkeepers, are a good example of how BPM struggles with the concept of ordered chaos so integral to the rogue-like experience. The one thing you can transfer between runs is coins, by a very randomly generated bank. While each dungeon will feature both shopkeepers, the bank seems much rarer. It’s almost never there when I see to have plenty of gold, and usually not seen when I need to withdraw. The weapon distribution and abilities could do with a little more randomization themselves. There are some fantastic things to buy and find, but the best stuff tends to be distributed on an all or nothing basis. Bosses have more dangerous variations that can be generated, too. Fighting two at once with the base pistol isn’t ideal, that I promise you. The dungeons themselves have variations, and these should be lumped in with the challenges as well. I don’t mind being surprised, but suddenly having enemies take and deal extra damage thrust into the fray seems a bit unjust. That’s something you should choose to take, not stumble into partway through your great runs. For all its flaws, there’s many more wins in BPM: Bullets Per Minute, even though most of it is detached from the central rhythm mechanic in play. There’s a lot of rock-infused riffs to fire away to, and i actually like everything thats good here even if it is insanely difficult. It's not the easiest of recommendations due to the game's brutal difficulty level and heavy metal skew, but if you're on board with those things, willing to learn something new (and get your ass handed to you repeatedly in the process), and prepared to overcome the whims of some random elements to bring down Nidhogg, you're in for one hell of a time. Honestly, well executed passages are next-level satisfying, from triple-tap kill combos to the beat to the simple act of reloading some of the fiddlier weapons. Completionists beware, though — the list is a bit silly.

The difficulty without much progression and lack of any kind of guidance can make BPM feel a bit unwelcoming, which is a shame when its mechanics feel so great to learn. It's worth diving into for the core premise alone, but don't expect to have anyone hold your hand through hell.

Despite its shortcomings, we were always drawn to come back for 'one more run'. It nails the roguelite gameplay hook and has a unique gameplay mechanic to support it all. While it at times feels as though the game's fighting against you when everything comes together, there's nothing quite like it. Clearing a room of monsters in time to the guitar shredding soundtrack never gets old and the constant progression of unlocking new characters and skills is an incentive to keep trying. It's not a home run, but those who buy into BPM: Bullet Per Minute's charm will certainly have a good time.

Reload, dodge and fire to the beat in an insanely satisfying hyper-stylized fast-paced action experience that will really get you in your flow state. Cannot recommend it enough! Each successful run is at most a couple of hours but the replayability is very high; I have dumped nearly 100 hours into it and keep coming back for the pure joy of the games carefully tuned and well polished basic mechanics.

There is no middle ground for BPM: either you love it, or you hate it. Personally, I feel this game crosses the line between challenge and frustration, offering a learning curve that is almost impossible to climb if you are not a true FPS lover. The soundtrack is excellent and the bundle with it is worth your money, but if you're not a very, very patient person with lightning-fast reflexes and an excellent sense of rhythm, you better look somewhere else.

Crypt of the Necrodancer was better as Cadence of Hyrule, and I look forward to a more well-balanced, better-paced version of this game with an actual difficulty curve.

I absolutely loathe the graphical style. OMG it is so bad. But, you know what? That is totally irrelevant right now. This game is so much funI absolutely loathe the graphical style. OMG it is so bad. Two caveats: if you don't enjoy hard rock music then you may struggle to enjoy this experience (I wouldn't listen to the soundtrack outside of playing the game but I can enjoy it enough while playing), and it is a particularly difficult shooter even on "easy" mode. But oh so much fun. Just watch, musicians of all stripes, shapes and sizes are going to want on this bandwagon for interactive music entertainment. The best element of this game? Without a question, it is the ability to regenerate in a new level each time you die. Don’t get me wrong. You don’t want to die. Ever. But at least you don't do the same enemies time and time again, whenever you die. Another smart feature they implemented is to play really, really annoying sounds after you die. The best way to avoid that sound is to quickly launch into another game before you have time to think about whether you want another round of mayhem. And it works beautifully.

To borrow the game's own 90s shooter comparisons, playing BPM is like diving into Doom on Ultra Nightmare before learning how to play an FPS. The fun is still there, but it's buried under so many roadblocks and complications. The frustrating end result is a game with a great idea that bungles just about every part of the execution.

Jump, dash, shoot and reload to the beat to advance through a host of monster-filled levels, collecting keys, coins, equipment, and stats to try and get through the seven stages that constitute each playthrough. The gameplay is fun, fast, and frantic, it looks good and sounds great, with a perfect heavy-metal soundtrack, though there are a few flaws. A lack of enemy variety, particularly bosses, as well as level variety starts to show quickly.

It's not a forgiving experience, and though it's difficult to master, BPM proves surprisingly easy to pick up and play. If you're prepared to die a lot, you'll find an incredible game within, and it's one title rhythm fans would do well to put on their playlist.

If heavy metal has you running for the hills, then BPM: Bullets Per Minute won’t convert you. But for everyone else, this is an adrenaline fuelled heavy-metal ride that you’d be daft to miss.
