Ever Forward is a pretty great little puzzler that just so happens to have a wonderful narrative weaved in. The originality of the stages is worth highlighting, but there is a bit of a struggle in terms of the gameplay mechanics and the movement of Maya; it feels a bit too slow and not always accurate in its response time. More often than not the issue is that from time to time you’ll hit a particular puzzle that you’ll struggle mightily to overcome, and usually not from the execution side so much as being unsure what you’re even supposed to do. Granted, if you would prefer not to have a game holding your hand and want all leaps of logic to come from within this could be a major positive, but what’s usually confounding is that there is so little to work with mechanically that more often than not you’re left to bang your head against the wall as you’re stuck without even having many tools at your disposal to hope to work with. Ever Forward could be a great addition to your PS5 (or PS4) library if Pathea Games is able to swiftly correct the performance issues. If not, I would suggest picking it up for PC instead. There is a lot of promise here and I really want to finish out Maya and Ann’s tale. Preferably sooner than later.

A reasonably interesting narrative and some complex puzzles aren’t enough to raise Ever Forward out of mediocrity. The PS5 version comes with some new glitches which further spoil an experience that was already short and underwhelming when it originally released on PC. This one is for puzzle fans that have little else to play.

What attracted me initially was art style of the island setting (I was hoping for another Rime) but that one has the least of all to do with anything else and by the unsatisfying end there is nothing beautiful left in the game.

Ever Forward has so much potential. Due to the unused graphic style and soulful story, developer Pathea could have created a real indie pearl. The gameplay around the frustrating puzzles prevents that, although great puzzles crept in in between, which I was happy to break my head about. At the latest because of the stressful puzzles with time pressure, I often lost the fun of the game. Especially the gravity puzzles at the end are one cramp. The puzzles aren't the hardest this genre has to offer, but the 2nd half was more of an annoyance than an adventure. The game is beautiful to look at and has a very good score to go along side it. The story is nothing to write home about, but I wish they would have fleshed out the world more. However, with this being a puzzle game I am satisfied that there was a story at all.I definitely would not recommend this game because I don't think it's very fun. It's great to look at. I do believe that Pathea Games can create an amazing puzzle game akin to The Witness or The Talos Principle. Ever Forward is a step in the right direction albeit a very small one.

It's quite telling that Ever Forward's demo (released independently with the subtitle Prologue) isn't that much shorter than an actual full play-through. Despite the title's tense stealth sections, and fairly involved puzzle-solving, the fact of the matter is that the final product plays out like the tutorial to a much longer adventure that never starts. By the time Maya's story starts to breathe, and the core gameplay begins introducing complex and layered puzzles, the journey is more or less over. The atmosphere is commendable, as are the puzzles actually present, but the is sure to leave genre veterans disappointed, and newcomers desperate for some meat to chew on.

I think Ever Forward is better so far, I am excited to see what the full release will have. overall it's really chill and has a nice balance of making you think hard and letting you relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. 2 thumbs up and 5 stars from me!
