While I am not a huge fan of rogue-likes in general, the aesthetics and diversity of this game's design has kept me coming back throughout the years to give it another shot again and again, as of now I have completed a run with every character, which is a credit to how much the game is rewarding to complete, sufficiently challenging and most certainly replayable.

This simple but effective introduction cut scene gives the player just enough lore to be able to give meaning to Isaac’s journey whilst keeping the story open to interpretation. This open idea story is supported by the games 14 different endings in Rebirth depending on which levels you visit and which bosses you defeat.Just like the multiple endings, The Binding Of Isaac is overflowing with content for its cost and size, giving a huge amount of replay ability. With 341 obtainable items as you make your way through 11 levels or ‘floors’, it’s rare to get two similar runs. However, with this level of depth, it can be overwhelming for new players with so many items with so many different effects to understand what they have just obtained. With over 150+ hours played on this game, there are still items I pick up that I don’t remember what they do, and the game would benefit from an in-game menu in which you could view the effect of items and how you unlock them, rather than having to pause and check the wiki.Another key characteristic of The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth is its difficulty. The game is unforgiving and most runs will end in death for Isaac rather than reaching one of the endings. A core mechanic of Isaac is item synergies, were two or more items work together to give Isaac a significant advantage over the monsters that face him. For example, there is an item called Unicorn Stump that allows Isaac to become invisible for a short period, but disables his ability to shoot. Alone this item is average, but when combined with items that make Isaac damage enemies when he touches them, such as Midas’ Touch, it becomes a synergy that almost guarantees a victory if played correctly. However, with 341 items in the rotation, these game winning combos are only occasional. It is a feeling that is unique to a game like The Binding Of Isaac when you figure out how you can change your play style to most effectively us the items you have and win the run. On the other hand, this means some runs are doomed to fail even in the best players hands, as some items are not just average without synergies, but just plain awful. For example, there is an item called Kamikaze, which simply makes Isaac explode when you press the left trigger on your controller, which sounds bad, but there is an item that makes Isaac immune to explosions, allowing you to only blow up your enemies. But with no way of guaranteeing that you will find that second item, Kamikaze is useless. This can be frustrating as many runs end with you feeling that no matter how well you played, the items that were randomly given to you just weren’t good enough for you to win. To players who stick with Isaac, this will provide a challenge as the developers have designed the game so it is plausible to win every run, if you’re good enough. There are even ‘Challenge Runs’ available within Rebirth that are designed to be bad runs, most starting Isaac with a set of Items and disabling most item pickups throughout the rest of the run.The Xbox One version of The Binding Of Isaac has a few technical issues, mainly crashes. Although game crashes can be frequent, the game has Autosaving checkpoints that allow you to resume almost exactly where you left off, be it due to a crash or just quitting the game. This feature also prevents you from just leaving and restarting when you do something wrong, further adding to the ruthless nature of Isaac. The controls for Isaac work well on the Xbox Controller, with the player given either the D-pad or left joystick to move Isaac and the A, X, B and Y buttons or the right joystick for firing. One more advanced skill in Isaac is being able to fire shots diagonally, as traditionally Isaac can only fire up, down, left or right. On PC with a keyboard, this is a skill that has to be learnt, but using the Xbox joystick this is simple, removing an element of skill. The Xbox controller is also limited in some options compared to keyboard, such as lacking a button to quickly restart a run. The Binding Of Isaac does have a multiplayer mode, involving the second player becoming a ‘familiar’ for the main player, a sort of mini Isaac that has a small amount of help and flies around Isaac shooting. However, this mode feels unpolished with the second player being significantly less powerful than the first player controlling Isaac, and the mode being limited to local play on the same Xbox. Isaac would benefit from an online co-op mode to play with your friends.
